The 240-Hour Visa-Free Transit Policy
For nationalities that are not on China's full visa-free list — most notably US citizens — China offers a 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit policy. This allows travellers to stay in China for up to 10 days without a visa, provided they enter from and depart to a third country.
✈️ How the 240-Hour Transit Policy Works
To use this policy, your group must enter China from a country other than your home country, and depart China to a country other than your home country. For example, a US group flying New York → Tokyo → Beijing → Shanghai → Tokyo → New York qualifies — Japan is the third country on both ends. The policy covers stays of up to 10 days and is available in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and several other major cities. This is sufficient for most 7–10 day study tour programmes.
For US Groups — Our Recommendation
We regularly arrange China programmes for US-based groups using the 240-hour transit policy. The routing (typically via Japan, South Korea or Singapore) adds a small amount of travel complexity but is entirely manageable and allows a full 7–10 day China programme without a formal visa application. Visa Types: Which One Does Your Group Need?
For participants who do require a Chinese visa, choosing the correct visa category is important. Applying for the wrong type can cause delays or rejection. Here are the four visa types relevant to the groups we work with:
Commercial Visa
M Visa — Business & Commercial
Business Delegations · Corporate GroupsThe standard visa for business delegations and corporate groups where the primary purpose is company visits, executive meetings and commercial business activities.
