2–3 nights as an add-on to Shanghai. As a standalone destination, 3–4 nights allows coverage of Alibaba campus, West Lake and surrounding cultural sites. Just 45 minutes from Shanghai by high-speed rail.
Best Season to Visit
March–May (spring, West Lake at its most beautiful) and September–November (autumn foliage, comfortable temperatures). Avoid July–August (hot and humid). The G20 summit was held here in 2016 — the city has world-class infrastructure as a result.
Visa Requirements
Most nationalities (UK, EU, Australia, NZ, Japan, S. Korea) enter visa-free for up to 15 days as of 2026. US, Canada and India nationals require a standard tourist (L) or group travel visa. Hangzhou is easily combined with Shanghai, which has its own 144-hour transit visa-free policy.
Getting There
Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport (HGH) serves major domestic routes and some international routes. High-speed rail to Shanghai: 45 mins. High-speed rail to Beijing: 4.5–5 hrs. The high-speed rail connection to Shanghai makes Hangzhou the easiest day-trip or overnight extension in China.
