Educational Tours to China — Every Question Answered

China is consistently ranked among the safest countries in the world for tourists, and violent crime is extremely rare in the cities our programmes visit. Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu all have extensive public-safety infrastructure, reliable emergency services and a culture in which visitors are treated with great hospitality. In 13 years of educational programmes we have never experienced a violent incident involving any student or teacher. The risks that do exist — minor illness, occasional petty theft in crowded markets, traffic — are identical to travel in any major world city and are fully addressed in our pre-trip briefing and supervision protocols. We encourage parents to read their government's current travel advisory; most English-speaking countries rate China at Level 1 (normal precautions), the same level as France, Japan and the USA.

Six core measures: DBS/background-checked guides for all under-18 groups; a minimum 1:10 teacher-to-student ratio with your teachers part of the supervisory team throughout; single-sex rooming, with students never roomed individually with adults outside their school party; 4-star hotels with 24-hour reception, security and CCTV in common areas; 24/7 emergency contact with a senior team member reachable by the lead teacher at any hour; and completed risk-assessment documents for every activity, site and transport method, ready for school-board submission.

Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu and Shenzhen all have international hospitals with English-speaking staff, comparable in quality to major hospitals in Western Europe or Australia, and our guides know the nearest suitable facility for every location. For minor illness, guides carry a first-aid kit and standard over-the-counter medications; for anything requiring medical attention, the student is accompanied to hospital by a guide and a teacher — never alone. All students and teachers must have comprehensive travel insurance including medical treatment and medical evacuation before joining any program.

We use restaurants selected specifically for international school groups — licensed, regularly inspected and experienced with foreign visitors — chosen for hygiene reliability, private dining spaces and variety. Stomach upsets occasionally occur as on any international trip; we brief students on how to eat safely and our guides can advise at any time. Significant food-poisoning events are extremely rare in our program history.

Our primary school programmes are designed for students from age 8. We don't typically recommend China for younger students — the travel distances, jet lag and program intensity suit children who are a little more independent. For age 8–10 groups we adapt significantly: shorter activity sessions, more rest breaks and earlier evening returns to the hotel. The Great Wall toboggan slide and the Chengdu panda base are perennial favourites for this age group.

China works very well for primary students aged 9–13 — in some ways younger students are better travellers, more open to new food, more naturally curious and genuinely delighted by things older students take for granted. Primary programmes work best when experience-led: riding a toboggan down the Great Wall, making dumplings, meeting a panda. These experiences form lasting memories and shift how children see the world far more powerfully than any classroom lesson, and primary China trips consistently produce the highest post-trip engagement in later China/Asia curriculum topics.

We can design mixed-age programmes, but we generally recommend keeping age groups within a 4–5 year range for the best experience — the pace, content and supervision needs of 9-year-olds differ significantly from those of 16-year-olds. All programmes are quoted individually. As indicative planning figures: a 7-day primary trip (Beijing + Chengdu) is USD 2,000–2,800 per student; an 8-day high school program (Beijing + Xi'an + Shanghai) USD 2,500–3,400; a 10-day comprehensive program USD 3,200–4,500; and an 8-day university/MBA program USD 2,800–4,000. These include accommodation, all meals, in-China transport, guide and all activity entry fees; international flights and visas are excluded. A comparable 7-day educational tour to Japan typically costs USD 3,500–5,000+ per student, so China offers exceptional value.

Yes — teacher places are typically complimentary on the basis of one free teacher place for every 10–15 paying students, depending on program. Additional teachers above this ratio pay a reduced accompanying rate.

Yes. We offer flexible instalment structures. A typical schedule is: a deposit (10–15%) on student registration to secure the place, a second instalment (35–40%) due 3 months before departure, and the final balance due 6 weeks before departure. We can adapt this to suit your school's specific timing and cash flow.

The full policy is provided in writing as part of the program contract. In general: cancellations more than 90 days before departure forfeit the deposit only; 60–90 days before, 30–40% of total cost; within 60 days, 50–80% depending on non-recoverable committed costs; and for force majeure we work with clients to reschedule or provide the maximum possible refund. We strongly recommend all schools purchase group travel insurance that covers cancellation.

Yes. All school programmes include a pre-trip resource pack (an age-appropriate introduction to China's history, culture and key Mandarin phrases, ready for 2–3 classroom sessions), a structured student journal with observation prompts and vocabulary activities, a post-trip reflection guide for the first week back, and a curriculum mapping document linking each activity to national curriculum outcomes — ready for Ofsted, ERO, AISQ or equivalent inspectorate documentation.

Recommended lead time is 4–6 months, allowing for school-board approval, parent communication, student registration, visa applications and flight booking. The minimum is around 8 weeks for a straightforward itinerary. The most popular months — April–May and September–October — fill up quickly.

Our standard program price covers everything from your arrival at the first Chinese airport to your departure from the last one. International flights are not included as standard, but we can assist with group flight booking through our airline contacts. We provide the in-China arrival and departure times required to book compatible flights and coordinate airport pickups with your schedule.

We have successfully managed vegetarian, vegan, halal, gluten-free, nut allergies, severe allergies and dairy-free requirements across our school programmes. Each student with specific requirements receives a dietary information card in Chinese, which the guide presents at every meal, so no student is ever left without a suitable meal.

It depends on nationality. As of 2026, China has expanded visa-free access significantly: most EU countries, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Japan, South Korea and others can enter visa-free for up to 15 days, while the USA, Canada, India and others require a standard tourist (L) or group travel visa. For mixed-nationality groups we prepare visa guidance student-by-student and supply all supporting documentation. Visa-free arrangements change, so always verify current requirements with the Chinese embassy or consulate before committing to dates.

Yes — under-18 students travel on school trips without their parents routinely, with no special entry requirements from China's side. Students travel on their own valid passports (and visa if required), and we advise on the specific requirements for your departure country during program preparation.

All students have Wi-Fi access at hotels and can communicate via WhatsApp, iMessage or any other platform, provided they have a VPN installed before departure. Most teachers establish a daily update system — a WhatsApp parent group or class blog — to share photos and a brief daily message, and in the event of any incident parents are contacted immediately by the lead teacher.

Chinese cuisine is varied enough that even very selective eaters typically find plenty they enjoy — rice, noodles, chicken, egg dishes, stir-fried vegetables and soups are standard fare, and our group restaurant menus are designed with international palates in mind. Most students who claim to be fussy eaters arrive home having tried and enjoyed foods they never expected to like; food is one of the most commonly cited trip highlights.

Many of the most transformative experiences we've witnessed involved students who were anxious beforehand. Our guides are experienced in supporting students who need extra reassurance, and we can make specific accommodations — room placement, buddy arrangements, activity flexibility. In almost every case where an anxious student has joined a program, they have returned more confident, more independent and with experiences that become a source of pride rather than fear.

Significantly less than most teachers expect. Your role is essentially internal (securing board approval, managing registration), communication (parent letters, the information evening), admin (collecting passports, dietary and consent forms) and on-trip supervision and pastoral care. We handle the full itinerary, all bookings, hotels, transport, guides, risk assessments, invitation letters, dietary coordination, pre-trip resources and the post-trip report. Most teacher clients describe the process as surprisingly manageable.
