🏅 CPD Certificate Issued on Completion

China's education system consistently produces some of the world's highest-performing students in mathematics, science and problem-solving. The Shanghai maths mastery approach has now been adopted in curricula across the UK, Australia and beyond — but most of the teachers implementing it have never seen it delivered in its original context.

A China teacher study tour changes that. It gives teachers and school leaders direct observation of Chinese classrooms, face-to-face professional exchange with Chinese teachers, and the cultural context that explains why China's education system produces the outcomes it does. What you bring back is not just inspiration — it is practical, curriculum-applicable knowledge that your school can use immediately.

Not Just a Cultural Holiday with an Education Theme

Every element of our teacher programmes is designed for professional observation and reflection — not passive tourism. School visits are structured for meaningful pedagogical insight. Teacher exchange sessions are facilitated discussions, not performances. The curriculum development workshop on Day 7 is where the trip's learning becomes concrete, practical and ready to bring back to your school.

🎯 Why Teachers Come to China for CPD

📐

See Shanghai Maths in Its Original Context

Most Western maths teachers implementing the mastery approach have never seen it delivered by the teachers who invented it. Observing Shanghai maths lessons in actual Shanghai classrooms — and then discussing methodology with the teachers delivering them — is transformative.

🏫

Understand Chinese Student Motivation

Chinese students consistently outperform peers in international assessments. Understanding the combination of school culture, family expectation, teacher relationship and societal framing that produces this motivation is more practically useful than any pedagogy book.

🤝

Exchange With Peers, Not Just Observe

Our teacher exchange sessions are structured professional discussions between Western and Chinese teachers of the same subject and age group. The two-way learning — Chinese teachers are genuinely curious about Western approaches too — produces insights that observation alone cannot.

🌏

Cultural Context That Changes Everything

Understanding why Chinese education works the way it does — Confucian respect for learning, family investment, the weight of the gaokao exam, the role of teachers in Chinese society — transforms how you interpret what you observe in classrooms and brings it to life in your own school.

📋 CPD Programme Components

👤 Individual Teachers Are Welcome

You Do Not Need to Bring a School Group

Our teacher study tours welcome individual teachers joining an open-enrolment cohort just as warmly as school groups. We run open-cohort teacher programmes throughout the year where teachers from different schools, subjects and countries travel together as a professional group. This format often produces a richer CPD experience than a single-school group, because the cross-school professional exchange across different systems and subjects is itself a significant part of the value. Contact us for the next available open-cohort date and the current programme price.

Interested in joining as an individual teacher?

Send us your subject, school type and preferred dates. We will confirm the next open-cohort date that fits and provide full programme details.

FAQ

What CPD documentation is issued on completion?
Every participant receives a CPD certificate on completion confirming programme hours, content areas and professional learning outcomes. We also provide a programme report and individual learning log template that participants can submit to their school's CPD record system. Our teacher programmes are structured to meet the CPD requirements of British, Australian, American and most international school systems. If your school has specific CPD documentation requirements, share them with us before the programme and we will confirm how our documentation meets them.
How many CPD hours does the programme count for?
Our 8-day teacher programme delivers approximately 40–45 hours of structured professional learning — comprising school observation sessions, teacher exchange sessions, expert briefings, the curriculum development workshop and facilitated evening reflection sessions. This significantly exceeds the typical annual CPD requirement for most school systems. Exact hours are confirmed in your CPD certificate based on the specific programme delivered.
Can the programme be adapted for my specific subject?
Yes — and we encourage this. Mathematics teachers get the Shanghai maths deep dive. Science teachers spend more time in STEM centres and science labs. Mandarin teachers get additional language immersion sessions and Chinese school Mandarin class observations. International school leaders focus more on school governance and curriculum delivery. Tell us your subject and professional focus when you enquire and we will build the programme around it.
What is the minimum school group size for a dedicated school programme?
For a private school-group teacher programme, our minimum is 8 teachers from the same institution. Below 8, we recommend joining an open-cohort programme instead — the professional exchange with teachers from other schools and countries is often rated the most valuable part of the experience by returning participants. Individual teachers are equally welcome on cohort dates.
