Most nationalities still need a visa to visit China, but the list of exceptions grew fast between 2024 and 2026. This China visa study tour guide explains who can enter visa-free, which visa fits your group, and how much time to allow.

Every passport is checked against the current rules before any flights are booked.
Quick Answer

Most nationalities require a visa to enter China for a study tour. Groups that visit companies and factories usually need a business (M) visa, and academic groups usually need an exchange (F) visa. Both need an invitation letter from a registered host in China.

As of October 2026, citizens of about 80 countries, including most of the EU, the UK, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Brazil and the Gulf states, can enter visa-free for up to 30 days, and a study tour is an allowed purpose. US and Indian citizens still need a visa.

Key Takeaways

  • Check the passport first. 29 countries have a two-way exemption with China; about 50 more have a one-way 30-day exemption until December 31, 2026.
  • Match the visa to the itinerary. Company visits point to an M visa; university and cultural programs point to an F visa.
  • Plan in weeks, not days. Start 6 to 12 weeks before departure, depending on nationality.
  • Stays over 30 days need a visa, even for visa-free passports.

The table below follows the Ministry of Foreign Affairs list and the National Immigration Administration (NIA) notice. "Business" and "exchange visits" are both allowed purposes, so a 10-day study tour for a German or Brazilian group needs no visa.

China Visa Study Tour Types: M, F or L?

The visa category must match what you actually do in China. A mismatch is a common reason for delays and questions at the border.

VisaPurposeBest for
M (business)Meetings, supplier visits, factory inspections, trade fairs.Executive delegations, procurement teams, corporate study tours with company visits.
F (exchange)Non-commercial study tours, lectures, research and cultural visits.University delegations, school cultural programs, MBA classes with campus visits only.
L (tourist)Tourism and sightseeing.School trips that are mainly sightseeing. An invitation letter is often not needed.

The mistake we see most often: an executive group applies for an F visa because the trip is called a "study tour", but the itinerary includes factory floors and supplier meetings. If any day includes commercial activity, choose M. For mixed groups, we file M visas for the executives and F visas for the academic members, on one group timeline.

How to Apply for a Chinese Visa, Step by Step

  • 1. Confirm who needs a visa. Check nationality, passport expiry and length of stay for every participant.
  • 2. Get the invitation letter from your host or program operator in China.
  • 3. Gather the documents: a passport valid for 6 more months with 2 blank pages, one 48 mm x 33 mm photo, flight and hotel bookings, and the letter.
  • 4. Fill in the online form on the official COVA portal and wait for the pre-check, usually 3 to 5 working days.
  • 5. Submit and collect at the embassy or Chinese Visa Application Service Center (CVASC). Standard processing is 4 working days. Until December 31, 2026, fingerprints are waived for short-term visas such as M, F and L.
  • 6. Fill in the arrival card, online since November 20, 2025, through the NIA website or the NIA 12367 app. Visa-free travelers need one too.

Why 4 Working Days Often Means 2 Weeks

The 4 days start only when the center accepts your passport, after the online pre-check. So a typical file takes 8 or 9 calendar days, and holidays such as Chinese New Year and National Day add more.

China Invitation Letter for Visa: How CST Handles It

For F and M visas, the invitation letter is the core document, and a vague one is the most common cause of delay we see. It must come from a registered Chinese entity, on letterhead with its official seal, and list the applicant's name, date of birth and passport number, the purpose, dates and cities, who pays, and the relationship with the host.

How CST Prepares Your Visa File

Since 2013, China Study Tour (CST) has run programs from offices in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. For every group, we:

  • Check nationalities within 24 hours of receiving the group list.
  • Issue invitation letters within 2 business days, one per participant, covering the full itinerary.
  • Send a short guide for each applicant's own embassy, and track every file until the visas are issued.
  • Brief the group two weeks before departure on what to expect at immigration.

No operator can guarantee a visa, because the embassy decides. What we can do is send a complete file and warn you early when a passport needs more time. See our China study tour programs for executives and schools.

About this guide

The CST program operations team in Shanghai, which prepares visa files for every CST group, wrote this guide. Visa-free lists come from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the NIA; lead times come from CST's group files. Treat every list as a snapshot as of October 2026 and confirm with your local Chinese embassy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need a visa for a China study tour?

Most nationalities do. As of October 2026, citizens of about 80 countries, including most of the EU, the UK, Australia, Japan and the Gulf states, can enter visa-free for up to 30 days. Everyone else needs a visa: usually an M visa for company visits or an F visa for academic programs.

Can I join a study tour under China's 30-day visa-free entry?

Yes, if your passport is on the visa-free list and your stay is 30 days or less, because business and exchange visits are allowed purposes. You still need a valid passport, proof of onward travel and an arrival card. For longer stays, apply for an M or F visa.

What is the difference between an M visa and an F visa?

The M visa covers commercial activity, such as business meetings, supplier visits and factory inspections. The F visa covers non-commercial exchanges, such as academic study tours, lectures and cultural programs. So a school group visiting universities usually uses F, and an executive group touring factories usually uses M.

How long does it take to get a Chinese visa for a group?

Processing takes 4 working days after the center accepts the passport, plus 3 to 5 working days for the online pre-check. With appointments and holidays, most groups should start 6 to 8 weeks before departure. Indian and most African applicants should allow about 12 weeks.

What must a China invitation letter for a visa include?

The applicant's name, date of birth and passport number; the purpose, dates and cities of the visit; who pays; and the relationship with the host. It must come from a registered Chinese company, university or program operator, on letterhead with its official seal.

Can US citizens use the 240-hour visa-free transit for a study tour?

Only if they fly on to a third country, for example from Shanghai to Tokyo, and stay within the permitted areas for up to 10 days. A round trip from the United States does not qualify, so a normal study tour needs an M or F visa.
