China study tour safety for schools: a student group in matching caps outside the visitor center of a Chinese EV maker

When a school asks us about China study tour safety for schools, the real question underneath is usually simpler. Who is watching my students, and what happens if something goes wrong? China Study Tour (CST) has run programs in China since 2013, with our own teams in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. Every trip we run is built for one school. Below are the answers we give on a first call, and the documents you can ask to see before you sign.

In short

Every CST school trip is custom. Your students travel with your own teachers, usually one per 12. On our side, every group has at least one coordinator. The standard base is one interpreter, and where budget allows we add a full-time escort. Groups of 15 or more always get one interpreter plus one escort. We use only licensed, compliant hotels. You get all of it in writing before you book.

Four Stages, One Written Plan

China is a low-crime country. What goes wrong on student trips here is usually practical: a busy crossing, a hot afternoon, a hidden peanut sauce, a student who stays too long at a gift shop. So our approach to China study tour safety for schools follows the trip itself, stage by stage.

01Before you fly

We design the itinerary around your dates, subjects, group size and budget. Then we send a risk assessment for every venue on it, plus health, consent and allergy forms. We also flag medications that are controlled in China, including some ADHD drugs, so families can check early and not at the airport.

02On arrival

Every student gets an English emergency card with the hotel address, the group leader's number and the CST coordinator's number. On the first night, teachers walk the fire exits with our staff, and then we do a room check.

03Every day

We count heads at every transition and set a fixed meeting point before each venue. Students cross streets in pairs, because e-scooters are almost silent. From June to September, we keep outdoor time to mornings and late afternoons. Each restaurant gets the allergy details before the group sits down.

04If something goes wrong

We choose the nearest suitable hospital in each city in advance, including international options such as United Family in Beijing and Shanghai. One adult stays with the student, one stays with the group, and the school hears from the trip leader first.

Custom Staffing: The Core of Our China School Trip Safety Plan

Every CST program is a private trip built for one school, so we do not publish one fixed ratio for everyone. Staffing is quoted for your group and written into your proposal. The minimum below never changes.

Your teachers travel with you

Our groups always arrive with their own school staff, usually one teacher for every 12 students. Your teachers lead on supervision, discipline and pastoral care. We brief them before departure and again on the ground, so they know the plan for each day.

Our team, set by your budget and brief

  • Every group: at least one CST coordinator on the ground.
  • Standard base: one interpreter who stays with the group from arrival to departure.
  • Where budget allows: one interpreter plus one full-time escort (national guide).
  • Groups of 15 or more: one interpreter plus one escort, always.

Need more staff, a second language or a specialist guide for a subject your students study? We add them to your proposal and price them in.

Safe Access to Real Factories and Campuses

Most school safety guides stop at hotels and buses. Ours cannot, because company visits are the heart of a CST program. We choose each site for what your students actually study, from EV engineering to robotics. Students walk real production lines and tech campuses, and these sites have rules that most schools have never met.

During live robot demonstrations, the group stays behind a rope line.

We send the host a visitor list in advance and brief students on the coach. When the group arrives, the host's own team gives a site briefing. Depending on the plant, students may need closed-toe shoes, safety glasses, hard hats or anti-static smocks. Groups stay inside marked walkways. This matters in EV and battery plants, where automated carts move parts on their own schedule. Larger groups split into teams of 10 to 15, each with a host guide and a teacher.

Why can't a school book a factory visit on its own?

Leading Chinese companies accept outside groups through partners they already know, because someone has to answer for the visitor list and for behavior on site. Cold emails from overseas schools rarely get a reply. We have built our host relationships one visit at a time since 2013, with companies such as BYD, Huawei and Tencent, where every visitor list is checked in advance. Your group arrives as a known guest, and that is what opens the door to a working production line.

Coaches and Hotels We Put in Writing

Because your trip is custom, we match the coach and the hotel to your group size, route and budget. Every coach we charter holds a passenger-transport license, GPS tracking and carrier liability insurance, under a formal charter contract. Students wear seatbelts, and drivers take a 20-minute break at least every two hours. For trips longer than about 400 km, we choose high-speed rail. Beijing to Shanghai takes under five hours by train, which is safer and faster than a full day on the highway.

Hotels are fully licensed, with fire safety certification on file. Students stay on dedicated floors with their teachers, rooms are separated by gender, and staff do night checks every evening.

China Study Tour (CST) Safety for Schools: 7 Questions to Ask

Ask us these questions. Then ask every other provider on your shortlist. A good operator answers each one with a document, not a promise.

  1. Can I see the risk assessment for each venue on our itinerary?
  2. Who supervises students on the ground, our teachers or your staff?
  3. How many of your own people travel with the group, and in what roles?
  4. How are students roomed, and who does night checks?
  5. Who do we call in an emergency, and in what language?
  6. Which hospital will you use in each city?
  7. What rules apply on your factory and campus visits?

Walk away if you hear any of these:

  • "Our staffing is flexible, we will work it out later."
  • "We will sort out the coach closer to the date."
  • "Students have a free evening to explore."
  • A quote far below everyone else's. The savings come from the coach, the hotel or the insurance.

China School Trip Safety Questions We Hear Most

How is CST staffed for a school group?

Every CST program is custom, so staffing is quoted for your group. Your students travel with their own teachers, usually one teacher per 12 students. On our side, every group has at least one CST coordinator, and the standard base is one interpreter who stays with the group from arrival to departure. Where budget allows, we add a full-time escort. Any group of 15 or more always gets one interpreter plus one escort, and extra staff can be added on request.

Are your China school trips custom or fixed departures?

All CST programs are custom. We build each trip around one school's dates, group size, subjects, pace and budget. Then we quote staffing, coaches, hotels and company visits to match. We do not sell set-departure school tours.

How experienced is CST with school groups?

CST has operated in China since 2013 and has delivered 300+ custom programs for schools, business schools and corporate groups from 30+ countries. Our own teams work in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. We work in English, Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, and Japanese. All guides are bilingual, and additional language support is available upon request.

Is China safe for school groups?

Yes. Violent crime against visitors is rare. The risks that actually appear on school trips are traffic, summer heat, crowds, food allergies and students drifting away from the group. Each one is covered by a specific rule in our plan, and we share that plan in writing before you book.

What insurance does a school group need for China?

You need travel medical cover valid in mainland China with evacuation, your school's liability cover extended to overseas trips, and personal accident cover for each traveler. Every coach we charter also carries carrier liability insurance. Check that activities such as cycling or hiking are not excluded.

What are the emergency numbers in China?

Call 120 for an ambulance, 110 for police and 119 for fire. In a real emergency, our staff call these numbers first and then the CST coordinator. Responders may not speak English, so our bilingual team talks to them for the student.

How far ahead should a school plan a China study tour?

Allow 8 to 12 weeks for a custom program with company visits, licensed coaches and group-friendly hotels. Add visa time if your country is not covered by visa-free entry. Partner-school exchanges need six months or more, because Chinese school calendars set the pace.

What happens if a student gets separated from the group?

Students are briefed to stay where they are, call their group leader and show their English emergency card to venue staff. One adult searches, one stays with the group, and the trip leader informs the school. Fixed meeting points and headcounts at every transition keep this rare.
