Best Time for a China Study Tour (CST): When Executive Delegations Should Go
The best time for a China study tour is spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November). These are the most comfortable seasons. However, for an executive group, the schedule depends more on company availability and group size than on the weather. Here is a month-by-month breakdown.
Travel sites grade months by weather and crowds. That suits tourists, not executives. Your meetings happen in boardrooms, showrooms and research labs, and all of them are air-conditioned. Three things decide whether your week works: the people you want to meet are at their desks, the sites are open, and hotel prices are fair. All three change a lot from month to month. So an executive China study tour should follow the business calendar, not the weather forecast.

The best time for a China study tour is March to May or September to November. Within these windows, late March to April and all of September give the best mix of company access, mild weather in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, and fair hotel prices. Avoid Golden Week (October 1-7) and the six to eight weeks around Chinese New Year.
Key Takeaways
- Company access decides. Every meeting happens indoors, so host availability matters more than the weather.
- September is the best month. Late April is a close second.
- Two periods to avoid. October 1-7, and mid-January to late February.
- Trade fairs can help. The Canton Fair and the China International Import Expo (CIIE) are easy to combine with company visits.
- Book early. Plan 8-12 weeks ahead, and 12 or more in peak months or near major fairs.
Best Time for a China Study Tour (CST), Month by Month
The table grades each month on one question: can a host company receive a delegation that month? It decides whether your agenda holds.
| Month | Season | Company Availability | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | Winter | Moderate | Year-end work closes mid-month. Avoid the last week. |
| February | Winter | Very low | Chinese New Year closures (2027: about February 5-12) and a slow return to work. Avoid. |
| March | Spring | High | Executives are back at their desks. University semester is in session. |
| April | Spring | High | Peak access. Skip Qingming (April 3-5). Guangzhou hotels fill during the Canton Fair. |
| May | Spring | High | Excellent from May 6, after the Labor Day holiday. |
| June | Summer | Moderate | Dragon Boat Festival long weekend. Heat builds. |
| July | Summer | Moderate | Hot and humid (30-38°C). Universities are on break. |
| August | Summer | Moderate | Typhoon risk in the south. Indoor visits run normally. |
| September | Autumn | High | The best month: clear weather, executives planning the fourth quarter. |
| October | Autumn | Mixed | Avoid October 1-7. Excellent from October 8. |
| November | Autumn | High | Clear skies. CIIE brings business traffic to Shanghai. |
| December | Winter | Moderate | Good for planning meetings. Avoid the last two weeks. |
They come from our booking desk, not a weather site. China Study Tour (CST) has arranged company visits in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen since 2013. Over 300+ programs for 500+ executives from 30+ countries, the same patterns repeat every year. "High" means most host companies confirm a visit with normal lead time. "Very low" means the country is almost closed to delegations.

Spring (March to May): The Peak Window
Spring is the safer of the two peak windows. By mid-March, the Chinese New Year break is over. Executives are back, factories run at full capacity, and the university semester is in session. This matters if your program includes an MBA exchange or a guest lecture. Temperatures in the three main cities sit between 15°C and 25°C.

Three dates shape the season. First, Qingming (April 3-5, 2027) is a short three-day break, so simply plan around it. Second, Labor Day (May 1-5) closes most offices for five days. If you arrive on May 6, you get one of the best-value weeks of the year. Third, the spring Canton Fair in Guangzhou (from April 15) roughly doubles hotel prices there. Book three months ahead, or stay in Shenzhen and take the train in.
Summer (June to August): Workable, With Trade-offs
Company visits run normally in summer, because meetings happen indoors. The cost is comfort and some content. Heat of 30-38°C tires a group that moves between cities. Typhoons sometimes delay flights on the south coast in August. Also, universities are on break, so campus sessions are mostly unavailable.
In return, you get flexibility. Summer has the softest hotel prices, and a program can sometimes come together with six weeks of notice. For example, if a board wants to see China's electric vehicle (EV) or robotics supply chain before autumn planning, a July week of indoor visits in Shenzhen works well. For fixed departure dates, see our monthly group tours.
Autumn (September to November): The Strongest Season
September is the best month of the year for an executive program. The summer haze lifts, and Beijing skies clear. Executives are building fourth-quarter plans, so a meeting with a visiting delegation gets priority. Hotel prices are still fair, and the short Mid-Autumn break is the only holiday.

Why You Should Avoid Golden Week
Golden Week, October 1-7 every year, is a national holiday. Company campuses, factories and government offices close, and the whole country travels. China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism counted 888 million domestic trips during the eight-day holiday in 2025. As a result, trains, flights and hotels are overloaded. Work restarts on October 8, and late October brings some of the best weather in the north.
The autumn Canton Fair runs from October 15 to November 4, 2026. Then the China International Import Expo (November 5-10, 2026) brings global business traffic to Shanghai. Both fairs are worth planning around. A delegation can walk the fair in the morning and meet partners in the same city in the afternoon.
Winter (December to February): Planning Season
Early December suits one kind of program: next-year planning. Budgets and strategy are being set, so a China visit that feeds your roadmap arrives at the right moment. Beijing is often below freezing, but Shenzhen and Guangzhou stay mild.
January and February are the quietest months for company visits. Factories rush to finish year-end orders, and executives have little free time. Chinese New Year 2027 falls on February 6. The official holiday is about a week, but the real disruption lasts six to eight weeks, as hundreds of millions of workers travel home and back. We do not run programs in this window, and we advise clients to avoid it unless the festival itself is the goal.
Trade Fair and National Holiday Calendar
These are the busy seasons for China company visits. Use the table to see which weeks a holiday or a fair touches, and which weeks are clear.

| Event | Dates | Location | Impact on Your Program |
|---|---|---|---|
| Golden Week (National Day) | October 1-7, every year | Nationwide | Severe. Avoid. Resume from October 8. |
| Canton Fair (autumn) | October 15-19, October 23-27, October 31 to November 4, 2026 | Guangzhou | Hotel surge. Stay in Shenzhen or book 3+ months ahead. |
| CIIE (Import Expo) | November 5-10, 2026 | Shanghai | Heavy business traffic. A natural anchor for visits. |
| Chinese New Year | February 6, 2027 (holiday about February 5-12) | Nationwide | Severe. Avoid mid-January to late February. |
| Qingming Festival | April 3-5, 2027 | Nationwide | Minor. Plan around the 3-day break. |
| Canton Fair (spring) | April 15-19, April 23-27, May 1-5, 2027 | Guangzhou | Hotel surge. Good to combine with visits. |
| Labor Day | May 1-5, 2027 | Nationwide | Minor. Arrive from May 6. |
| Dragon Boat Festival | June 9-11, 2027 | Nationwide | Minor. Short long weekend. |
| Mid-Autumn Festival | September 15-17, 2027 | Nationwide | Minor. Brief mid-September pause. |
Fair dates follow the official fair calendars. The 2027 holiday dates are estimates based on recent State Council patterns, and the official notice usually comes in late 2026. Our teams in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen check holiday dates again for every program, because one shifted workday can break an itinerary.
How Far Ahead to Book, by Season
| Season or Window | Booking Lead Time |
|---|---|
| Spring (March to May) | 10-12 weeks |
| Autumn (October 8 to November) | 12+ weeks. Companies fill fourth-quarter calendars early. |
| Near the Canton Fair or CIIE | 12+ weeks. Hotels 3+ months ahead. |
| Summer (June to August) | 6-8 weeks |
| Early December | 6-8 weeks |
| Less than 4 weeks | Limited choice of companies. Most research sites unavailable. |
Once you know the best time for a China study tour, book to match it. Two things add time. Groups larger than 20, and requests for restricted sites such as research and development (R&D) centers, need two to four extra weeks. Also, a university exchange session needs a full semester of notice.
The CST program team in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen wrote this guide. The availability grades and lead times come from CST booking records for company visits since 2013. Fair dates come from the official Canton Fair and CIIE calendars, and the travel figure comes from China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The 2027 holiday dates are estimates. All dates are a snapshot as of September 2026.
FAQ
What is the best month for an executive China study tour?
September. Executives are back from summer and planning the fourth quarter, the weather is clear and mild, and hotel prices are still fair. It also falls before Golden Week. Late April is a close second, as long as you avoid Qingming and plan around Canton Fair hotel prices in Guangzhou.
Is Golden Week really that bad for business visits?
Yes. From October 1 to 7, company campuses, factories and government offices close, and travel demand is huge. The 2025 holiday saw 888 million domestic trips in eight days. Programs run normally again from October 8, so plan your arrival for that date or later.
Spring or autumn: which is better for a China study tour?
Both are peak windows. Spring is better if your program includes university sessions, because the semester is in session. Autumn is better for weather in northern China, and for combining your visits with the Canton Fair in Guangzhou or the CIIE in Shanghai.
Can we combine company visits with a trade fair?
Yes. The Canton Fair (April, and October to November, in Guangzhou) and the CIIE (November, in Shanghai) both work as the anchor of a one-week program. You visit the fair and meet companies in the same city. Book hotels at least three months ahead.
How far in advance should an executive delegation book?
Eight to twelve weeks for a custom program, and twelve or more in spring, in autumn and near major fairs. Larger groups and requests for research sites need extra time. With less than four weeks of notice, the choice of host companies becomes much smaller.
The best time for a China study tour is the week your hosts can say yes. Join one of our monthly group tours, which run on fixed dates through both peak windows, or ask us to build a custom program with confirmed company access in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen.
