📍 7 Cities Compared 🎓 MBA · Exec Education · Business Delegations 📖 16 min read Updated May 2026

Choosing the right city — or combination of cities — is one of the most important decisions in designing a China study tour or business delegation. Each of China's major cities has a distinct economic identity, industry profile, university ecosystem and cultural character. The city that is perfect for an MBA innovation programme is not necessarily the right choice for a sourcing delegation or a cultural exchange group.

This guide compares the seven cities we most frequently visit with study tour and delegation groups, rating each across the dimensions that matter most to programme designers: academic partners, company visit access, industry focus, logistical infrastructure and cultural experience. Use it to select the right city for your group's specific objectives.

Best used as a 1–2 day addition to a Beijing or Shanghai programme for cultural balance on longer programmes.

Recommended City Combinations

7 Days · Most Popular

The Innovation Circuit

Beijing (3 days) + Shenzhen (4 days)

China's AI and policy capital combined with its EV, robotics and hardware innovation hub. Covers Baidu, iFlytek, PKU exchange in Beijing, then BYD, DJI, humanoid robots and SUSTech in Shenzhen. The most comprehensive innovation overview available in 7 days.

10 Days · Most Comprehensive

The Three-City Programme

Beijing (3 days) + Shanghai (2 days) + Shenzhen (4 days) + Travel (1 day)

Policy + Finance/Manufacturing + Innovation. Covers China's three most important economic cities and gives students the broadest understanding of how China's economy works. Best for MBA and executive education groups. Add Xi'an as a 2-day cultural extension for 12-day groups.

7 Days · Supply Chain Focus

The Manufacturing Tour

Guangzhou/Foshan (3 days) + Shenzhen (3 days) + Yiwu (1 day)

Pearl River Delta manufacturing ecosystem + world's hardware innovation hub + global sourcing market. Ideal for sourcing, operations and supply chain groups. Combines furniture/appliance manufacturing (Guangzhou) with tech manufacturing (Shenzhen) and commodity trade (Yiwu).

10 Days · Cultural Immersion

The Cultural & Business Blend

Beijing (3 days) + Xi'an (2 days) + Chengdu (2 days) + Shenzhen (2 days) + Travel (1 day)

For groups wanting equal parts cultural depth and business content. Ancient capital (Beijing) → Terracotta Warriors (Xi'an) → Giant pandas + Sichuan culture (Chengdu) → Tech innovation (Shenzhen). Best for undergraduate groups or programmes with significant cultural objectives.

5 Days · Executive Sprint

The Executive Intensive

Beijing (2 days) + Shenzhen (3 days)

Maximum density programme for time-pressured executive groups. Day 1–2 Beijing: Baidu Robotaxi + iFlytek + government briefing. Day 3–5 Shenzhen: BYD + DJI + Humanoid robot factory + debrief. No cultural tourism — pure business and strategic intelligence.

7 Days · Sustainability Focus

The Green Economy Tour

Shanghai (2 days) + Shenzhen (3 days) + Guangzhou (2 days)

EV ecosystem from battery to vehicle to charging. Tesla Gigafactory (Shanghai) → BYD + CATL supply chain (Shenzhen) → Solar and appliance manufacturers (Guangzhou). For sustainability, energy and ESG-focused groups wanting the world's most advanced green economy at first hand.

The Most Important City Selection Principle

Always choose cities based on your programme's learning objectives — not based on which cities are most famous or most frequently visited. Beijing and Shanghai are both excellent cities, but if your group is focused on EV and robotics, spending 4 days in Shenzhen will produce better learning outcomes than splitting time equally across all three. Be ruthless about selecting the cities that best answer your central learning question, even if it means omitting more famous destinations.

The Overloading Warning

The most common mistake is trying to cover too many cities in too few days. Travelling between cities takes time — flights, transfers, check-ins — and a group that moves cities every two days spends significant programme time in transit rather than learning. For a 7-day programme, a maximum of two cities is strongly recommended. For 10 days, three cities is the practical limit for a programme that maintains learning depth rather than just accumulating geography.
